Nightmare Mode Guide

Once you have unlocked all of the nodes on a planet, the game will randomly spawn Nightmare Mode alerts on random nodes accross that planet. they will be indicated by a white swirl icon on the node as pictured. You do not have to play these nodes in nightmare mode as selecting them will give you the option to play as a normal mission or enter the nightmare mode alert.

Playing in nightmare mode will increase the difficulty of the mission by increasing the number of nigh level or specialist enemies encountered in the mission as well as hindering your team with a randomly selected handicap. However successful completion will reward a dual stat Nightmare Mod.

Possible Handicaps

All nightmare mode missions will have one of the following applied:

No Shields:  All player shields are reduced to zero.

Overshields cannot be created while this challenge is active, nor will any shield-affecting abilities work, including Valkyr's Paralysis.

Timer:  The mission has a 5-minute timer that will fail the mission if it runs down. Killing enemies will add 5 seconds to the timer.

Enemies dying from sources other than players (such as environmental hazards) will not contribute to the timer.

Killing Desert Skates or Feral Kubrow will not contribute to the timer.

This modifier is ignored if the mission type is Defense, Mobile Defense or Survival. No other modifier will take its place.

Health Vampire:  Players will lose 1.5% of their maximum health every second, Kills restore 12.5% of maximum health for the entire cell.

The explosion of Volatile Runners will also restore health.

Additionally the following handicaps will also always apply:

Low Gravity:   All missions have a 50% standard chance of low gravity on all Warframes, Enemies and Loot

No Ammo Drops: Ammo will not drop from lockers, ammo only drops from enemies

Increased Incoming Damage: All enemies will have damage output increased significantly

Enemy Level Increase: All enemies will have their level significantly increased

Enemy Type Replacement: In some cases enemies will be replaced entirely by stronger versions i.e. Lancers > Elite Lancers

Tips

When in Nightmare mode survivability is king, speed can still have its uses but bottom line at some point you are going to have to slow down and when you do you better be prepared to be one shotted unless you have some superior armour/shields/health to back you up.

To this end, Rhino is almost undisputedly a godsend in Nightmare modes, his Iron Skin ability can give you nigh-on invulnerability compared to your now highly squishy clanmates and even when that fails his high armour stats can massively reduce the buffed damage received from incoming attacks. It can also save you from knockdowns and poison attacks which can be fatal in Nightmare Mode.

If you don’t have a Rhino and you are determined to play Nightmare Mode (fly you fools) then you want to be using Valkyr, Frost, Saryn, Chroma and maybe Trinity. The first four have decent health, shields or armour to keep them from being annihilated in an instant and useful powers. Valkyrs Hysteria can be a lifesaver in a corner and Frost can Snowglobe if the proverbial hits the fan. Trinity's powers can help but lose energy and be prepared to hit the dirt hard.

With Mods you will need to focus on building up your Shields, Health, Shield Recharge and Power Efficiency. This will give you that little bit of extra breathing space you need when taking damage and allow you to keep up whatever power you are using to aid your survival as much as possible.

You will want to focus on ammo efficiency when choosing your weapons as it will be limited, however taking along a very efficient sniper rifle will not be useful, you will need to balance the ammo consumption with the amount of damage that you can lay down to make sure that high level enemy that just popped its head round the corner gets it blown clean off and still leaves time to deal with his now equally dangerous low level friends.

Unless you are high level already (in which case why do you need this guide?...) you should remember to progress through the mission with caution. Normal Warframe gameplay can be rushy, sprinting around corners and tearing off enemy heads. When it comes to playing Nightmare mode, treat it more like COD, watch your corners, keep your sights up and pop anything that moves before it has a chance to return fire. Don’t worry about the timer if its applied, as long as you keep killing for the added time bonus you will be fine and besides, if you are dead the timer won’t matter much anyway.
